Just for the JOY of it all

Rhythm 'n Move Work In Progress

There's something touching to me about a certain coming-full-circle of things that happens every now and then in life, like in this case, when I get to work on a project based heavily on rhythm with my rhythm teacher from my days back at PARTS. Going from a teacher-student relationship to then developping a professional one where we get to bounce ideas back and forth with each other, test each others' limits, all while keeping it light and joyful, all make for quite a moving experience.

Just recently at the beginning of September, we began working on this project headed by my aforementioned ex-rhythm teacher and his collective, Collectif du Lion, that is very heavily rhythm and music based and in which I intervene, finding a movement language, sometimes what felt like, to try to keep up with them, but eventually to make dance into a sort of visual music. We hope to get to the place where neither dance nor music seem to be leading one nor the other, but that we all move in such synchronicity and synthesis that we can all blend together as one.

3 days of work, a lot of singing taka ti taka ti ta, takadimi, ton tika ta ka di nata je no je no...so much so that they became ear worms, and this is what we had to show at our work in progress showing in Liege. At this point we were still 1 dancer down and we don't actually even know yet if we will be able to continue this project with any sort of finanacial support, but we each have decided we would all like to keep going with it anyway – to be part of a team that just wants to work because we enjoy the process of it, that we feel motivated beyond what money can measure, that we enjoy deeply searching for something together and just playing/jamming together – I mean, that's really enough for me these days.
